April Salon Feature - 'Obsessed with Nails'

This months very first Salon Feature from The Creative Beauty Group features the lovely Samantha Zavad and how she is literally ‘Obsessed with Nails’!

Counting herself as fairly new to the industry with 18 months of hard work and practice behind her, Sam already has a steadily growing business and has recently upgraded from her dining room table to the newly decorated spare room - a place for her clients to feel calm, relaxed and comfortable.

Coming from a very different background as an Operations Manager at a Financial Services Company Sam spent a lot of her time commuting to Portsmouth (from Salisbury), working long hours and constantly travelling. It was only in June 2013 when her mum was sadly taken ill and passed away that Samantha took some time out to re-evaluate her career and decided she was ready for a new challenge!

“During an appointment with my nail technician and friend, Karen Mackman (we were putting the world to rights as you do when you get your nails done) I told her I was ready for a new challenge. I wanted something to put the smile back on my face, it was Karen who suggested I look into becoming a nail technician, she thought I’d be really good at it.”

So in May 2014 Sam enrolled on The Complete Nail Training Course at The Creative Beauty Groups flagship academy in Bournemouth. The course included Manicure, Pedicure, Liquid & Powder and Gel enhancements and was taught by educator Jemeila Tourh.

“Since completing my training in 2014 I was primarily just doing my friends nails as and when they needed, building my confidence and learning my trade, focused only on natural nails.”

It wasn’t until late 2015 that Samantha started to dedicate some time to her business (after settling into a new house and getting married!) and 2016 sees the new launch of ‘Obsessed with Nails’ with a new name, new set up, new Facebook business page and a first dip into advertising!

“I had a professional logo designed from a sketch I drew and my business cards arrived this week with a loyalty scheme and referral discount on the back to encourage new business. I have also designed a flyer to do a leaflet drop in my local area!”

Specialising in natural nails for the time-being Samantha is staying focused on moving forward in the industry and introducing enhancements to her menu later this year after more training to build on her confidence and skills! With the help of some of TCBG’s favourites however Sam is still providing an excellent service to her natural nail clients.

“I use Gel II® and Pure Organics for my spa range as they are amazing and smell divine! I have a ridiculous number of glitters and I also have a selection of stamping plates and polishes which I hope my clients will be persuaded into using more often now they are getting more adventurous. I also often use Skyscraper® Glass to add strength for my natural nail clients.”

Asking Sam about her new set up we were amazed to hear she already has plans to move out to her very own garden cabin in the future but is extremely happy for the moment with her home based salon and how it reminds her of someone special!

“I always knew my branding was going to be purple, it’s the colour that has come to represent my mum, because her favourite flowers were purple anemones. I think she would be really proud of me for having the courage to reach out and do something I love; without her it would not have been possible. She loved getting her nails done, her time for herself, so it makes me smile to wonder what it would have been like to have her sat in the chair opposite me. She inspires me every day.”

Ultimately however it’s very clear that Sam is very client focused making sure every single client is happy and proud of their nails - whilst obviously having a good old natter!  Known for not rushing her clients out the door and creating looks for them to make them feel more feminine, sexy and enjoy spending time on themselves!

“There was a saying that I saw in TCBG Facebook Group recently which struck a chord with me “Clients sometimes arrive as strangers but always leave as friends.” that pretty much sums it up to be honest. I love my job for that very reason!”

This lady has big plans ahead of her and with a desire to keep learning she is sure to succeed! You can definitely see the passion Sam has for the nail industry and it was a pleasure to feature her for our very first Salon Feature!

“I hope to still have the same passion for my job in 10 years’ time as I do now. I love to learn and in an industry that is always evolving I can’t see that stopping. I hope to be able to always offer my clients something new, exciting and probably sparkly!”

We wish you all the luck in the world with the launch of your new business set up Sam!
